Where to start?
Prior to undertaking any drilling works, we always recommend having a geological survey carried out as this will help identify the likelihood of finding water and what quality you might expect. To this end we recommend consulting either the British Geological Survey (BGS) https://shop.bgs.ac.uk/Shop/Department/GeoReports or an independent water diviner. Either survey should provide a drilling recommendation and an indication of the likely yield and quality to expect. If you would prefer to drill without a survey, we can arrange a set of budget rates based on average figures.
What permissions do I need?
In Scotland, SEPA requires you to register your borehole if you are abstracting more than 10m3 per day or less than or equal to 50m3 per day. Anything under 10m3 per day is generally classed as domestic and does not have to be registered. Supplies exceeding 50m3 per day will require an abstraction licence. See more information here: https://www.sepa.org.uk/regulations/water/abstractions/
How deep will I have to drill, and what diameter?
The depth of the borehole will depend largely on the quantity of water required. However, we always find that budgeting for a 60m borehole is a reasonable average based on experience. For domestic and light-agricultural applications we prefer to drill in 190mm diameter. This size is preferred by leading consultants over our 140-160mm range, as the slight increase in size has been proven to maximise the potential of intersecting fractures and fissures by cutting a larger cross-sectional area.
In addition, drilling at 190mm diameter allows us to install a significant and effective gravel filter pack along with a high quality 100mm (4”) inverter-driven pumping system.
Why choose Raeburn?
